Can we still save our planet's biodiversity and provide stability?
HELPFUL
HOLOCENE
: Period of time in which temperature is stable and predictable
Development of new cultures and civilizations
We pretty much depend on the Holocene of our planet.
HARMFUL
ANTHROPOCENTRIC
: Humakind and human itself being the center of the Earth (primary drivers of change)
Instability on the planet (climate, air...)
OUTCOMES AND BIOSPHERE BOUNDARIES
OZONE LAYER
: Intercepts harmful ultraviolet light that might affect DNA, so it protects us from getting many diseases. Chemical pollutants are released into the atmosphere.
GLOBAL WARMING
: Uneven climate and temperature on planet Earth. Ice on the poles melting and oceans growing larger. Earth cools, but gets warm again (HOLOCENE), leading to a tipping point or irreversible crisis.
OCEAN ACIDIFICATION
: Reduction in the pH of the ocean because a huge amount of CO2 emissions end up in the there.
Fish and marine creatures dying
AEROSOLS AND COOLING EFFECT
: Aerosol Particles cool and mask the amount of sunlight that reaches the planet, so even though it seems good because it cools down things, it leads to negative consequences since global warming is being masked.
Incomplete full green house effect
LAND CONFIGURATION
: Nature is worsening its state and is in a current crisis since important regions are turning into savannahs because of climate change and deforestation (savahannization). Land evolution and configuration are not making any progress and are no longer predictable.
BIODIVERSITY
: It is the key and the builder of functonial and developed civilizations, but is currently in a critical state because of climate change that causes mass extinction, pollution and expansion of insutrialization.
FRESH WATER
: Water provides healthy marine and terrestrial life, but since it is vital for the survival of the human species and living things, we are finishing with this resource and making it scarce.
NUTRIENTS
: Since fertilizers are used to rapidly harvest crops, many of the fertilized nutrients left , end up in several bodies of water, which causes ocean acidification and the dead of marine species.
SOLUTIONS
PLANTING MORE TREES
will help to reduce and capture the amount of Carbon Dioxide that is currently all over the atmosphere (easy and economic solution)
BEING AWARE OF WHAT WE EAT
will allow us to go for vegetarian and/or vegan healthier options (plant based food, fruits...).
WASTE ELIMINATION
can be achieved by using a circular economy, so everything can be reused and will no longer contaminate the environment.
REDUCTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS
by recycling, reusing and reducing, slowly phasing out Fossil Fuels , stop plastic consumption or simply turning a light off.
TIPPING POINT
The critical state in which a change becomes irreversible and maybe permanent if nothing is done.
