Which antacid tablet is the most effective in neutralizing acid in the stomach?
What is neutralization
An example of this is when a strong acid like hydrochloric acid and a strong base like sodium hydroxide react with each other to form sodium chloride (which is a neutral salt) and water.
Neutralization occurs a strong acid reacts with a strong base. Resulting in a salt that is neutral.
Neutralization is the process antacids go through in order to deplete the acidity in someone's stomach.
This process is effective as when some's stomach is too acidic the best way to combat it is by digesting a strong base which is what the majority of antacids are made of, this means that the strongest base will create the most effective antacid tablet.
How does polarity affect solubility?
Only solutes with the same polarity as the solvent will dissolve.
This is important as this means that only acids and bases with the same polarity will dissolve with each other, meaning only bases with the same polarity as stomach acids can be used as antacids as if they are of different polarities the antacids will not dissolve leading to them to not be effective in any way shape or form.
Why does polarity affect solubility?
If two substances do not have the same polarity they will not attract each other and dissolve. Instead the solid will stay intact and will not dissolve with the liquid as the substances do not attract each other.
How to test the most effective antacid
By taking the same amount of popular bases used in antacid tablets, and slowly diluting them in the same amount of hydrochloric acid, with a few drops of pre-added universal indicator, until there is a permanent colour change. The most effective antacid will change colours permanently the fastest.
What is an antacid
An antacid is a a type of medicine that can be found in the forms of liquids, pill or tablets filled with strong basic compounds to counter-act the acidity found in people's stomaches
These are usually used to combat things like indigestion and heart burn
Negative side effects of antacids
Though antacids are medicines that are used to counter act things like heart burn and gastro, they can also have a range of undesirable side effects that include diarrhoea, flatulence or stomach cramps.
These negative side effects last a short time and will stop after the antacids are no longer being taken
Due to these side effects it's recommended that antacids aren't taken regularly and are take with precaution though they aren't especially harmful to a healthy and young human being.
