- - - - Human desire tends toward self gratification. Both the rich man and Big Foot use the natural world for profit and Janina sees this as an unforgivable act. But our society allows these men to behave this way. They do not have noble pursuits to fill up their time with and thus are allowed to consume with greed. We ignore the needs of the environment and believe everything is up for the taking. Should society be allowed to have the freedom to do whatever they desire without needing to understand the consequences? Is that freedom? NO!
- - - - The privileged are privileged because they have the ability to ignore what others cannot. They can write off the suffering of those who cannot ignore it because it creates and destroys their lives. In The Vegetarian Yeong-Hye's nightmares depicts the horrible reality of slaughtering animals for meat. Once she sees it, she cannot unsee it. And can no longer participate in the system or society that turns the other way, as to not see the violent realities that lay under their comfort.
    - - Humanity is content to use nature as its tool for self gain. The brother in law too uses Yeong-Hye for his own self gratification. He inserts her into his fantasy, the object of his work and eventually his lust. He only wants to understand her as an object to create his art. And it is perverse.
