- Supported rugged individualism.
- Reminded Americans that American dream was alive and well.
- Contributed to the dramatic rise in passenger service routes.
- His tour of America had an impact- it was shown in newspapers.

GD
The aviation industry flourished and innovated during the GD:
- Wealthy businessmen were the main customers.
- 1932-38: Number of passengers doubled.
- Air travel only impacted the rich and those employed in the industry during this time.

1960s
Air travel became cheaper, faster, and safer.
Benefitted middle class professionals, and the wealthy.
Private cars still dominated air travel though, carrying 90% of intercity passengers in 1960.

1970s
1972, about 1/2 of Americans had flown.

Cheaper fares due to:
- 747 jumbo jet (more fuel-efficient, carried more people).
- Deregulation of airlines.
1978 Airline Deregulation Act:
- Allowed airlines to set their own fares/routes.
- Led airlines to adopt a few major airports as hubs.
- Development of hubs increased air traffic congestion, and sometimes led to higher fares.
More air travel led to number of foreign tourists rising:
- 1970: about 2 million visitors
- 1980: 8 million visitors.
