FROM ALFONSO XIII TO THE

1902
In 1902, at the age of 16, Alfonso XIII became King of Spain. Spain was still devastated by the loss of its colonies in 1898, making it much less important in the world.
1977
A new electoral law allowed the government to call free elections. The first democratic elections were held and Adolfo Suárez´s party, the UCD (Unión de Centro Democrático)
1969
Franco chose Juan Carlos of Bourbon at this successor
1936
InJuly 1936, there was a military coup attempt by Generals Mola, Sanjurjo and Franco. The coup attempt failed, but it was the start of the Civil War. Spain was divided into two sides: the Republicans and the rebels, who were led by General Franco.
1975
Juan Carlos I became King on 22 November. King Juan Carlos I announced that Spain would become a democracy. This was the beginning of the Transition (the time period between dictatorship and democracy)
1976
The King named Adolfo Suárez as Prime Minister. He was responsible for calling elections and leading the country. During this time, Suáres made the following changes.
1978
The Constitution of 1978 was approved by Parliament ans the by the Spanish people in a referendum
1923-1930
Under Alfonso XIII´s rule, the government tried to modernise politics, society and the economy. This was called regenerationism. However, it was not very successful. Some reasons were.
1931
In April 1931, Alfonso XIII agreed to have municipal elections. The parties that favoured a Republic won. The Second Republic (1931-1936) was proclaimed. The monarchy was abolished and Alfonso XIII went into exile. A new constitution was approved in 1931.
1939
The war ended on 1 April 1939 with rebel victory when Franco´s side took control of Madrid.
