face saving strategies - Coggle Diagram
face saving strategies
what they are -> theory
Goffman -> everyone is concerned with how people perceive them
to lose face= to pubblicly suffer a diminished self-image
to save face= to do or say things in order to avoid embarassment and losing social status
2 kinds of face saving strategies
passive face-saving
it has the no harm phylosophy and means that you avoid doing things, which would embarass the other person
active face-saving
when you help and rescue a person, for example taking the blame for something they did
examples of face- saving strategies
not hinting at their failings
making excuses for them
taking the blame yourself for things another person has done
my face- saving strategies
when i am alone
when i do not remember an important matter I always say that i forgot it because something urgent occured
in pubblic i always adopt a passive face-saving strategy
I avoid coming in contact with people that might make me feel embarassed for something i did in the past
when i am with my friends
i try to change the matter of discussion when they feel embarassed
we support each other instead of underlining our failings
if one of us is embarassed for something, someone else who is not embarassed takes the blame for him/her
