Human
Counts
count the number of people or litter and record in a tally to make it clear and easy to record. Do this in different locations to use to compare and make an evaluation. Use a section on the tally to record unusual findings.
may not be reliable as can miss certain pieces and not add them to the tally or count something twice.

Questionairs
-
-
-
include: limited question so it is quick, tick boxes so is easier to fill out, clearly worded, follows logical sequence / order, avoids personal questions, leave difficult questions to end, thank respondents after
disadvantages: many people won't want to cooperate as are busy or concerned about identity threat, research shows data given isn't always accurate as people give what they think the questioner wants to hear.

Physical
rivers / coasts
cross sections: use tape measure to assess the channel width at right angle to the course of the river. if looking at river when discharge is the highest look for the highest point in the river. Then measure the depth at suitable intervals across the river. To record a wetted perimeter use a rope across the bed. For load measurements put your hand in at each point with closed eyes and pick a rock to give a random circle.
to get channel depth: measure at regular intervals across the river with metre stick or ranging pole
-
to measure the rivers velocity: use a flow meter. impeller is pointed upstream at the same points used to calculate depth. This can be used to calculate mean flow rate.

Bedload measurements: select randomly and place a ranging pole at intervals and collect stones that are touching the pole and measure the long axis, shape and radius of curvature of each stone.
wave frequency: pick a point in the water with a ranging pole upright and count the number of waves in a set time and work out frequency or the times between each wave.
