Dance of leaves
This project is about the future of human and plants.
The digital life trend has reduced the connection between human and nature, and at the same time, the ecological balance has been broken by people's overuse of plants. These two aspects are gradually making plants disappear from our lives.
(从第一段第二句继续)
I imagine a future where plants disappear completely and people use artificial plants to retrieve memories associated with nature.
第二段statement.
When real plants and artificial plants grow at the same time, there is a strong contrast.

However, the theme of the project was not so clearly defined at the beginning.
The project went through three design iterations. Let me show you how it was designed
My initial idea was based on a few keywords that interested me:
- People and plants
- The vitality of plants
- Plant behavior: plant perception, adaptation, and feedback to nature
- Ecological balance
- Symbiosis
Among them, plant behavior is a good entry point that I can use to connect other keywords.
PPT:there are so many behavior of plants suchas
There are also many special plants in nature that use their unique behaviors to adapt to their environment. Mimosa is one of them, so I chose mimosa as my observation object.
Then I started thinking about the digital medium I wanted to use.
I found Arduino and touchdesigner
So through these two technologies, I can use just one of these technologies, or combine them, to create a device or a human-computer interaction
Did some research on mimosa. It can control the water in its leaves. It Depends on the degree of the stimulation
The behavior of the mimosa plant is like the dance of the plant itself. Such behavior, though common, can only be recorded by eyes or images. Can it be recorded by sensors? I decided on a design direction for a while and started experimenting.
This project is inspired by my interest in plant behavior, combined with the current ecological environment issues and the trend of digital life, and finally presented through digital media technology. During the design process, I made a lot of attempts, constantly optimized the output content, and accumulated a lot of experience.
In the future, I will try
And bought a pot of mimosa
But because of transportation, its leaves are closed and no longer respond significantly to external touches.
同时,存在很多问题和indeterminacy 的部分. gave up
I tired to design a device to record the behavior of leaves 材料和步骤
I looked for installations that used similar techniques to mine. These two pieces impressed me the most. The closer the hand is to the flower, the more violently it shakes from side to side. The other collects the plant's micro-electricity and presents it to the audience in the form of music. Both projects give plant emotions and explore the relationship between people and plants equally.
I followed the original inspiration to design the output about cress
From germination to maturity very quickly
cress germinated within a day, and after two days, the tallest had grown to more than two centimeters.
After four days, the new shoots grow together with the already tall cress.
A week later, it's almost ripe.
When I finished shooting, I had about 8,000 photos. I put them together into video using SONY's official compositing software. Playing at 8x, I got a 30-second or so video where I could clearly watch cress grow taller.
I was inspired by the book Mushrooms at the End of the World. The relationship between plants and people is close and complex. People use plants to create countless economies, but there must be behaviors that violate the laws of nature. When the balance between humans and plants is broken, can we find our connection to nature only by imitating plants?
So I chose plastic rope as the material instead of plants. It's a completely man-made product, and it poses a threat to the environment.
I bought a servo motor that can rotate 360 degrees and move the plant as it rotates.
As it rotates from 0 degrees to 180 degrees, the plant moves from the lowest point to the highest point, and as it rotates from 180 degrees to 360 degrees, the plant returns from the highest point to the lowest point.
I imagine the future of artificial potted plants. I think of the Eternal Flower box. Because it is an artificial flower, it is immortal and has no vitality. So I decided to design my device based on the cover of the Eternal Flower Box.
This is my rendering.
I used 3D printing to make it.
The base is hollow, and I designed a cover plate to hide the Arduino and parts of the plant underneath, like a layer of soil.
