Plaszow:

Yanek still finds beauty in the world even though its not under the best circumstances. "...it was astounding that there could still be beauty in the world." pg.100

Yanek uses his anger to fuel him and continue to fight he won't let the Nazi just kill him. "I'm not going yo let them line me up on the edge of a pit and shoot me, I tole myself. I will fight back." pg. 109
Yanek finds light in the darkness when he find away to survive in the compact train cars when he gets in front of a ventilation grate. "My heart was still raced, but at least I could breathe." Pg. 115
Birkenau:
Yanek continues on believing gin himself even when thing are hard, "I was a new man that day, just like the bar mitzvah boy. I was a new man, and I was going to survive." pg. 135
Even though Yaneks identity is gone to other he still knows who he is but accept what he has become. " I was Prisoner B-3087. But I was alive," pg. 132
Auschwitz: Yanek finds light by becoming friends with another prisoner. "...I loved just talking again. Being human." pg.157
Sachsenhausen:
Death March(1):
Even though after helping a boy, the boy never thanked Yanek but even though in his anger Yanek remembered who he was still. "My name was still Yanek, and I was going to survive." pg.183
Yanek and the other prisoners find light in the darkness when everyone start to sing. "We sang as we walked, all of us, singing a hundred different songs and the Nazis let us sing." pg. 173
Yanek continues to work and follow orders until the Allies get there because they are close. "Every swing meant survival, I told myself. Work to live. Live until the Allies come." pg. 192
Bergen-Belsen:
Yanek uses his memory to help him survive and get better. "I hated to gibe up the delicious soup, but the bread sat better with me, and I slowly began to get stronger." Pg. 199
Yanek uses drive and determination to survive and get to a "better" place where he can survive better. "I ran a fast as I could. I had to win this race. I had to get out of Bergen-Belsen. I had to getaway from Moonface! I was running for my life." pg. 201
Gross-Rosen:

Yanek fantasizes of of a better world and future where he isn't a prisoner any more and is free. "That world existed, I knew. I couldn't reach it now,not yet, but soon, If I survived." pg. 215
Yanek has hope that he will make it out alive and finally be free. "The Allies were getting closer, and I was going to be there to welcome them when they got here." pg. 219
Death March(2):
Yanek was brave and courageous that he stood up to Moonface in order to survive and keep going. "Moonface had found it in his heart to be generous once, for whatever reason. But just this once." pg. 231
Yanek finds a clever way to sneak out and become free. " I had done it! I was no longer a Jew to the Nazis! I was going to live!" pg. 236
Dachau:
Yanek is finally rescued by the Allies and he can finally not be scared anymore. "Everythings going to be all right now, Yanek, he told me, and for the first time in six years, I believed he was right." Pg. 245
Munich:
Yanek finds a way to have a better future in America full of more opportunities for him. "There is a special program, he told me. For Jewish orphans of the war. They will help you get your visa and pay your way." pg. 255
Yanek after all this time finally was able to be free after his challenge to survive for six years and now after nine he has time to live. " For nine years I had done everything I could to survive. Now it was time to live." pg. 256
