CONCLUSIONS
Gorbachev's 'New Thinking', whilst having the aim of modernising the Soviet system and reducing the weight of responsibility for the satellite states, was implemented too quickly and was far too sudden, leading to the implosion of USSR
The changes that brought Communism closer to capitalist, democratic rule were welcomed in the West, but resented by many within USSR who believed that Gorbachev should have maintained a strong control over the satellite states
The reforms enacted in Russia signalled to the Communist Bloc that change was possible; as such, many began to detach themselves from the Soviet system
