-1959, liberal MP's formed the Progressive Party
-opposed apartheid
-supported the work restrictions and worked in a white only parliament
-argued SA govt intervened too much in protecting white jobs in the job market
-argued it was morally wrong and hindered economic development
-1974 Progressive Party won 59,000 votes
-United Party won 360,000 votes, however, it lost direction
-Progressive Federal Party became main opposition to the NP
-made SA realise the need for change
-when the Progressive Fed Party reached out to black people, it lost white support
