IDENTITY IN HAMLET
IDENTITY X MORTALITY
Hamlet gives us a detailed look on how existential dread can drive one to insanity from the lack of answers to lifes most pressing questions. the play sheds light on existential quandries centuries before the philosophers of the movement put pen to paper
The audience is immediately confronted with the most promiment of existential anxieties - Death. via the death of king hamlet
hamlets desire fro suicide progresses during the play but so does his fear of it. Hamlet is dealing with the horrors of living and existing but he cannot bring himself "not to be" because the finality of death scares hamlet. "his mind cannot conceive of its own lack of existance"
While Hamlet is stuck between to be or not to be, Ophelia actively chooses not to be. (girlqueen)
existential message that life is meaningless. the formalities of society that we hold to so much importance is meaningless in death. hamlet makes fun of these formalities in the gravyard scene. begins to contemplate inevitable death. the earth rebuilds itself, recycling life.
"in stripping away the illusions of identity and legacy, [hamlet] can realise that lifes meaning does not come from cosmic or godly grace but from within ones contentmment"

REAL OR CAKE? A VS R
Hamlet can be himself around horatio because he trusts him in his "heart of hearts". comfortable enough not to mask himself in performative identities for the sake of others who would mislead them.

shakesperes use of prose when hamlet is putting on a performative identity and verse when he is conversing his true feelings. almost everyone else in the play speaks in verse
hamlet doesnt want his mother to see his thoughts because her marriage to claudius is a betrayal so profound it cannot but shake his identity to its very core.
