STRESS

EUSTRESS
positive and gives feeling of fulfilment and arousal, can increase focus, attention and skill level - some athletes actively seek stressful situations
DISTRESS
negative form of stress and in extreme cases causes anxiety and apprehension - tends to be detrimental to sporting performance
EFFECTS
depends on the athletes level of ability, level of competition, and personality

if the athlete perceives the demand as a challenge (eustress) it can increase motivation and performance
if the athlete perceives the demand as a threat (distress) it can cause an increase in worry and a reduction in performance

ANXIETY
negative emotional state associated with stress, feelings of worry, nervousness, and apprehension

EFFECTS

can be monitored by the increase in somatic responses: increased HR, sweating, BP
-
if athlete perceives anxiety as its happening because they are unable to meet the demands of the activity - it further increases cognitive anxiety
AROUSAL

EFFECTS
if the athlete perceives arousal levels to be positive it will have a positive impact on performance
if changes are viewed as negative, increase anxiety, cause choking - occurs in high-pressure situations, will cause extreme anxiety and performance catastrophe
