Light and shadows
How light helps us to see things
Light from the objects can enter our eyes in one of the following ways
An object is a source of light
It can give off light that enters our eyes
So we can see the object directly
An object reflects light from a source of light
Objects that cannot give off light on their own
They must reflect light from a source of light to enter our eyes
So we are able to see them
Reflection of light also helps us to see images of objects in the mirror
Light from the surrounding is reflected by objects onto the smooth surface of the mirror
The light then reflected again by the smooth surface of the mirror and enter our eyes
This enables us to see the images of objects in the mirror
A periscope makes use of mirrors arranging in certain ways
to enable us to see objects that are out of sight
examples
Around the corners of a street
The object reflects the light onto the second mirror
The first mirror reflects the light onto the second mirror
The second mirror then reflects the light into our eyes
For us to see the image of the objects
Introduction of light
Light is a form of energy
Light helps us see things in our surroundings
Light travels in straight lines
How light passes through different materials
Not all materials allow the same amount of light to pass through them
There are three main groups of materials that allows the different amount of light to pass through them
Transparent material
Allows most light to pass through
Can see through clearly
Examples
Clear plastic
Air
Drinking water
Glass
Translucent material
Allows some light to pass through
Cannot see through it/ blurry
Examples
Frosted glass
Tracing paper
Cloth
Some types of plastic
Opaque material
Doesn't allow light to pass through
Cannot see through it
Examples
Metals
Wood
rubber
clay
A light sensor connected to a datalogger
Can be used to measure the amount of light that passes through an object or a place
When conducting an experiment to find out the amount of light passing through a material using a light sensor
The experiment should be conducted in a dark place
No other light sources from the surroundings
More accurate result
Sources of light
It is any object that can give off light of their own
Examples
All stars including the sun
Some animals such as fireflies
Fuels when they burn
Coals
firewood
Lit candles
Some non-living things when they are switched on
electric bulbs
lamps
torch lights
