Christianity - Self Death and the Afterlife
Resurrection
Coming back from the dead
Jesus resurrected after he was sacrificed
Physical and spiritual
Judgement
The Christian idea that you will be judged for your sins
Individual Judgement
Immediately after death people are sent to heaven, hell or purgatory
Final judgement
At the end of time, everyone who has ever lived is judged for how they lived. Those worthy face eternal bliss and those unworthy face eternal condemnation
Heaven and Hell
Quakers' beliefs
Some denominations don't have a defined belief in a traditional heaven and hell - some may instead believe they are psychological states experienced whilst living.
Those who are judged as worthy go to Heaven, those who are too sinful go to Hell
Hell
A complete absence of God and happiness, eternal punishment
Heaven
Eternal bliss, happiness, could know God on a more personal level
Purgatory
Catholic belief
An intermediate state after death for people to be spiritually cleansed and purified of sin so that they can go to Heaven
3 meaning/purposes of life for Christians
Bring about God's kingdom on Earth
Prepare for Judgement
How Christians prepare for judgement
Glorify God and have a personal relationship with Him
How Christians do this
Praying
Reciting bible verses
Be involved with the church (including singing hymns, etc)
Genesis 1:26
"Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Genesis 2:7
Then the Lord God formed a man[a] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Parable of the Sheep and Goats
Analogy Jesus used for judgement
People will be separated into two groups
Those who have lived good lives and put their faith in God will be allowed into heaven
Those who have rejected the belief in God and sinned will go to Hell
Matthew 25:31-46
All those on earth at that time will be brought before the Lord, and He will separate them “as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left”
Parable of the mustard seed
Much like how a mustard seed starts tiny and grows into something much bigger, the kingdom of God started small, but would grow and spread across the world to unlimited amounts of followers
