Semantic Roles
AGENT
The doer of the action
Example: "The dog chased the ball." (The dog is the agent.)
PATIENT
The entity undergoing an action or experiencing a change.
Example: "She ate an apple." (The apple is the patient.)
THEME
The entity being talked about or described.
Example: "The book is on the table." (The book is the theme.)
EXPERIENCER
The entity experiencing a sensation or feeling.
"I love chocolate." (I am the experiencer.)
INSTRUMENT
The means or tool used to perform an action.
Example: "He wrote the letter with a pen." (The pen is the instrument.)
LOCATION
The place or position of an entity or action.
Example: "The car is in the garage." (The garage is the location.)
SOURCE
The starting point or origin of an action.
Example: "She came from Paris." (Paris is the source.)
GOAL
The destination or target of an action.
"He went to the store." (The store is the goal.)
RECIPIENT
The entity receiving or benefiting from an action.
Example: "She gave the gift to her friend." (Her friend is the recipient.)
