Semakau landfill filling up
(stake holders involved)
Individual
No motivation/incentive by other stakleholders to encourage me to participate
My peers are disinterested in such a topic, thus leading me to be more carefree about the severity of the issue
Schools not doing enough to incentivise/teach younger generations to be more eco-friendly/learn environmentally beneficial behaviours
Parents being unaware of the situation, so i am not as aware to the problem
Not caring about something that i personally feel does not affect me.
I am less susceptible to the idea of being environmentally aware as i might feel that there is little/no relation from the situation towards myself
Personally, i may feel that i have bigger issues than a landfill in my person life that heavily affects me more
Not as aware to the seriousness of waste accumulation in singapore
The institutions i have studied in put less awareness than they supposedly are touting
More waste-heavy trends amongst younger generations such as myself that think very little of the situation.
Being oblivious to the situation as i was not properly taught by the peers in my life
Society
Education
Early childhood
Younger generations should be taught from a young age, and be encouraged to support/carry out environmentally friendly practices. Such as Recycling home waste/ being conscious of buying wasteful products
Budding adults
Older students would benefit from actively participating in activities that teach exactly how and why we should lead eco-friendly lifestyles. This would shape how they view their carbon footprint as they become adults and influence them to think of the greater good for our society as singaporeans
Trends
Wasteful fast fashion
Social media is heavily influency how we as a society think, so trends are heavily focused on, new trends overtake old ones, its harder to create a generation-long message of eco-friendlyness to the masses. It it harder to keep that sort of permanence in the online world without national collaboration of stakeholders.
Companies that are heavily popular such as SHEIN, create cheap, low quality products that are very likely to be thrown out faster due to defects from cheap clothing. Waste practices also occur such as throwing away excess materials, as new fashions trends are constantly appearing, forcing manufactorers to be encouraged to not follow more tedious environmentally friendly practices
Businesses
Restaurants/food places
New age technologies also encourage delivery as a more standard way of getting meals, leading to excess waste in both fuel and food packaging, which wastes resources , instead of people just choosing to eat outside.
Waste generated from eateries are also unreasonable , fast-food packaging, left overs and kitchen scraps all contribute towards the overall issue
Fashion industry
Clothing items are also costly in material to prolduce, however are thrown out at a dispoportionate rate due to fahsion trends that intimidate consumers to throw/stop using products. Leading to good clothing being wasted
Makeup and cosmestics are usually very costly and lead to alot of waste, the new fast fashion type of trends lead to consumers buying products and not using/throwing them after awhile. Customers should donate whatever they can/ recycle materials salvagable.
Supermarkets
Waste generated from excessive packaging such as plastics, from both on-shelf products and customers who use unreasonable amounts of plastic bags
(also stems from asian households hording plastic bags for trash rather than recycling and sorting rubbish)
Excess foodwaste is heavily generated due to the stigma of "ugly-food" Much waste is thrown out rather than being donated/repurposed
Government
Methods
More living areas with integrated Green activites
This would heavily encourage newer residents of that area to pick up on recycling if it were integrated smartly into their everyday lives. (e.g smart waste dustbins at blocks/ separate recycling chutes for all newer living projetcts
Weekly meetings with residents on their recycling progress, encourages them to be more careful with their purchases and actions
Mandatory practices for citizens to follow
To work as a group in their individual communities towards a greener goal
HDB Flats to log and recycle their waste output.
With such outreach, Public broadcasting should be utilised to spread the message to fellow citizens about the essential role that each one of us plays when it comes to a greener society
Influence
Governing bodies are less likely to showcase eco-friendlyness, and are usually overshadowed by other political issues deemed more "important"
With such great reach of audience, as a government, efforts should be heavily redirected to teaching it's citizens and contributors to be more mindful of their practices as it affects everyone in the body.
Less care for the issue only increases issues such as logistical expenses to solve/fix an issue in the future, because the people were not informed of the situation
nation
More nation-related efforts
Creating a sense of habit for singaporeans, to intergate these eco behaviours into our culture as singporeans in singapore. (e.g make friday a special day for green practicies such as recycling)
Eco-friendly builds for the entire singapore moving forward, to create a sense of environmental consciousness towards singaporeans as a whole.
Need to change a national mindset
Singaporeans need to adapt doing something themselves for the good of the nation as whole, instead of sitting dily by waiting for the problem to pass. This can be clearly seen in how most people think in our society, always the notion of, "why should it be me, not someone else?"
Even though we are labeled as a green country, singaporeans also need to not be complacent and learn that our total waste output has an impact on everyone's life in the country
