PBL3: Mindfulness and memory- LO2- What is mindfulness and what aspects are beneficial?
One definition of mindfulness is "A mental state achieved by focusing ones awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting ones feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. (Kabatt-Zin, 2015)
Analayo (2019) argues that uncertainties in definitions of mindfulness undermine the reliability of research
Chiesa, (2012) discusses that it is surprising that significantly low effort has been taken towards the achievement of a consensus about an unequivocal operationalization of mindfulness in western psychology
modern definitions of mindfulness differ from more traditional definitions
Mindfulness based interventions have been shown to improve both psychological and physical symptoms (Sharipo, 2005)
Beneficial aspects
Reduces stress (Kriakous & Lamers., 2021)
Reduces depression symptoms (Reangsing et al., 2021)
Reduces anxiety (Fumero et al., 2020)
Improving mood regulation (Remmers et al., 2015)
Physical pain (Hearn, 2020)
Chronic pain (Jackson et al., 2019)
Improves sleep (Shallcross et al., 2019)
ADHD symptoms (Oliva et al., 2021)
Helps with digestive problems (Cherpak, 2019)
Boost concentration and focus. (Armstrong, 2019)
Improves self-esteem (Randall & Pratt., 2015)
Quach et al., (2016) identified that mindfulness meditation is significantly effective at improving working memory capacity in adolescence.
Brown et al., (2016) also identified that mindfulness is effective at increasing episodic memory performance
CONCLUSION:
With a plethora of both physical and psychological benefits including episodic and autobiographic working memory, academic questions why there has not been a drive to achieve a consensus on the definitions of mindfulness within a clinical setting, as this undermines the reliability of research
