Dimension, Tolerances and Assemblies
Types of dimensioning
- parallel dimensioning - consist of several dimensions orginating from a common referance saface (also known as the datum)
- superimposed running dimensioning - simplifies parallel dimensions in order to reduce the space used on a drawing
- chain dimensioning - should only be used if the function of the object would not be affected byb the accumulation of the tolerance
- dimensioning small features - placing arrow heads between the extension lines may make the dimension very diffcult to read. Arrow heads can be placed outside the etension lines instead.
- dimensioning of multiple features - to dimension multiple same dimensions use N x dimension.
- combined dimensioning - used only chain and parallel dimensioning
- dimensioning of cicle, arc, and hole
- a cicle is dimensioned by its diameter
- an arc is dimensioned by its radius
- holes are located by their centrelines

rules of dimensioning
- dimensions and drawings must be need
- dimensions should not be duplicated
- Same dimension should not be repeated on different view, or the same information need not be given in two different ways
- avoid dimensioning to hidden line and features
- dimension lines, extension lines and object outlines should not cross or overlap
type of tolerance
bilateral: allowed to vary in two directions from the specified dimensions. Both direction need not vary by the amount
