An introduction to energy, enzymes and metabolism
Chemical energy: energy in molecular bonds, it is a form of potential energy.
Laws of thermodynamics
1st: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but transformed from one type to another.
2nd: Transfer of energy from one from to another increases entropy (degree of disorder) of a system. Increase in entropy= less energy available for change
-
-
Spontaneous reactions: occurs without input of additional energy, not fast, can be slow
Enzymes
-
-
-
Inhibition
Competitive: molecule binds to active site, inhibits substrate from binding, high Km more substrate needed
Non competitive: lowers Vmax without affecting Km, inhibitor binds to allosteric site, not active site
-
-
-
Activation energy- energy required to start reaction, allows molecules to get close to cause bond arrangements
-
Anabolic reactions
Biosynthetic reactions, make large or small molecules not available form food, requires energy input
