Definition
Calcium channel blockers are medications used to lower blood pressure. They work by preventing calcium from entering the cells of the heart and arteries.
Indications.
High blood pressure.
Angina.
Arrythmias.
Mechanism of action.
Calcium ions necessary for cntraction of muscle fibres.
Blocks entery of calcium ions into muscle fibres.
Relaxes muscles.
Dilates muscles.
Nursing considerations.
Blood pressure and heart rate, at least 30 minutes before.
Contra-indications.
Shock.
Conduction defects.
Pre-existing bradycardia.
Hypersensitivity.
Very low blood pressure.
Side effects.
Rash.
Constipation.
Irregular heart rate.
Dizziness.
Headache.
Gingival overgrowth.
Storage condition.
Room temparature(15 to 25 degrees celcius.)
Route of administration.
Parenteral.
