Validity
-
Qualitative research method, so they write in their own words and tend to go into more detail as they want varying answers to their questions
The researcher can get a variety of responses, this means they can discover varying reasons that people give for their answers
If the respondent is unsure about something, the language used in a question can be altered and so that the interviewer can explain it to them
The absence of a tightly defined schedule allows a discussion to develop and this can allow the interview to explore issues in great detail
-
-
The data records what actually happens as the method does not rely on the respondents answering questions honestly
-
It’s easier to make a record of what is happening, especially if the group knows that they are being recorded.
The researcher can ask questions openly without fear of ‘giving the game away’, adding validity
Gives in-depth insight into the author’s perspective, therefore high in validity.
-
Ethical issues
As they are usually anonymous, respondents are less likely to lie, making this method more valid in comparison to qualitative methods such as an interview
More suitable for sensitive topics as they can make the individual feel more comfortable with answering the questions as they are usually anonymous and cannot be held accountable by the law with what they write; all of which increases validity
-
Practical issues
Quick and easy to collect data, very practical
Cheap to produce and carry out, very practical
No interviewers to pay, cheap to classify results and inexpensive – few practical issues
Easier to record what happens, especially if the group knows they are being observed
Less time consuming, so more cost effective. Also gives access to wide range of statistics
There is a wide availability of the material and they can easily be accessed. This can lead them to be more practical.
fast and efficient analysis possible with pre-coded closed questions. Answers can be easily quantified and entered on to computers
