management strategies to protect the global carbon cycle
afforestation
how will this help
help to reduce co2 levels in the medium-long term and combat climate change. it can also reduce flood risk and soil erosion and increase biodiversity
how does the REDD scheme help
it incentivises developing countries to conserve their rainforest by placing a monetary value on forest conservation
what is happening in china?
there is a massive government-sponsored afforestation programme that began in 1978. it aims to afforest 400,000 km2 (an area roughly the size of Spain) by 2050. in the decade 2000-2009, 30,000 km2 was successfully planted. It is also to combat desertification and land degradation
agricultural practices
examples of unsustainable practices -
over-cultivation ,overgrazing and excessive intensification often result in soil erosion and the release of large quantities of carbon to the atmosphere
4 ways emissions may be reduced in land and crop management
zero tillage - growing crops without ploughing soil. this conserves the soils organic content, reducing oxidation and the risk of erosion by wind and water
contour ploughing and terracing on slopes to reduce run-off and erosion
avoiding the use of heavy farm machinery on wet soils, which lead to compaction and the risk of erosion by surface run-off
polyculture - growing annual crops interspersed with trees. this provides year-round ground cover and protect soils from erosion
how can livestock and manure be managed to reduce emissions?
improving the Quality of animal feed to reduce enteric fermentation so that less feed is converted to CH4. mixing methane inhibitors with livestock feed
controlling the way manure decomposes to reduce CH4 emissions
cap and trade
what is the cap and trade scheme
offers alternative international market based approach to limit co2 emissions. Under this scheme businesses are allocated an annual quota for their co2 emissions. if them emit less than their quota they receive carbon credits.
carbon credits can be traded on international markets. businesses that exceed their quotas must purchase additional credits or incur financial penalties
carbon offsets are credits awarded to countries and companies for schemes such as afforestation, renewable energy and wetland restoration
