They both had the goal to get the girl in the end.
Bassanio, woeing her and selecting the right casket. thus getting the girl in the end.
"But for when this ring parts from this finger, then parts life from hence. o, then be bold to say Bassanio's dead!"
3.2.187-189
Bassanio says this after he is accepted by Portia as a suitor.
Gatsby did not get the girl and in the end was murdered by Wilson.
"I don't think she ever loved him."

Gatsby says this as he is talking about Daisy loving Tom.
Challenges
Bassanio needed money to be able to woe Portia.
He had to get a loan but when he asked Antonio he did not have the money.
He had to get a loan from Shylock on Antonios credit.
Ended with the bond being taken back because they did not uphold it, this put Antonios life in danger.
Gatsby needed Tom out of the picture to be happy with Daisy.
Daisy was married too and had a child with Tom.
Gatsby had to convince her to leave Tom to be with him.
Tom and Daisy had a daughter this put a hold on Daisy leaving Tom.
