Structure, Movement, and Control
Structure and Movement
The Skeletal System
The body is able to move because of the skeletal system and muscular system.
The skeletal system has 4 jobs- protects internal organs, provides support, helps the body move, and stores minerals
Calcium is stored in bones and calcium is used for many uses and muscles and the nervous system needs it
Bones help you stand up and not look like a bean bag. They give you support.
Your bones also help protect your softer tissue like how your skull protects your brain
The muscular system and skeleton system work together so you can move. Bones that are attached to muscle can move
Compact bone-the hard outer layer of bone
Spongy bone-is the interior region of bone that contains many tiny holes
The Muscular System
Without muscle cells you wouldn't be able to do a lot of things like talk
About 1/2 of our body weight is muscle cells
The three different types of muscles are cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, and smooth muscle that work in different ways
The heart is the only place that has cardiac muscle
Smooth muscles transport things in your body
Control and Coordination
The nervous system helps maintain homeostatis
The Nervous System
The nervous system can receive information, process it, and respond to it in less than one second
Neurons-basic units of the nervous system
There are two different type of nervous system- the central and peripheral nervous system.
Information firsts goes to the peripheral nervous system then the central nervous system for processing
The nervous system can automatically do functions like breathing
Walking is not automatic and you need to think about doing them
Reflexes-automatic movements in response to a signal
Your sense of touch makes it so that when you burn yourself you reflex to move away from the hot surface.
The Endocrine System
Hormones-chemical signals released by the organs of the endocrine system
Hormones take longer to travel than the nervous system, but hormones last longer
In order for you to grow it takes many systems one of them being growth hormone
