MARXISM - marxists suggest that the education system only reproduces class inequality
Marxists also dislike setting and streaming, as it can cause inequalities to become worse
BOURDIEU - argues that cultural capital is the reason working class pupils underachieve, this is because middle class pupils are born into a culture with knowledge and values that give them an advantage to succeed / ALTHUSSER - suggests false class consciousness is why the working class are obediant, because they do not realise they are oppressed
LIBERAL FEMINISM - argues that the education system socialises young people in gender roles
RADICAL FEMINISTS - argue the education system is a tool to perpetuates differences into strict inflexible gender roles
MARXIST FEMINIST - suggest capitalism is the reason for oppresion and argue the purpose of the education system is to create an obeident workforce
HEATON AND LAWSON argues that the hidden curriculum taught patriarchal and traditional values in schools / STANWORTH - suggests teachers are more likely to recommend higher education to boys than girls and hold their expectations of them higher.
FUNCTIONALISTS - believes that all pupils have an equal opportunity in the education system, and that it is fair and meritocratic. Also suggests that schools are perfect for secondary socialisation. To functionalists, education performs certain roles - allocation function, social placement and the socialisation function
DURKHEIM - argues that schools are agencies for socialisation and prepare children for their adult economic role
THE NEW RIGHT - believes private competition is the best way to create an efficient education system, dislikes services ran by the state
prefers competition as it can raise standards and lead to a more educated workforce
their influence has created a more widespread parental choice and competition between schools
CHUBB AND MOE - compettion is better as it increases educational standards and leads children to performing better along with welcoming higher class parents

INTERACTIONISM / WEBER argued that to understand human behaviour we need to understand the meanings behind the behaviour.
He categorised this into 4 social actions
INSTRUMENTALLY RATIONAL ACTION - the way a person attempts to achieve a goal
VALUE RATIONAL ACTION - when a person pursues a goal based on desirability compared to logicality
TRADITIONAL ACTION - things a person has been socialised into doing
AFFECTIVE ACTION - the most irrational action, to do with emotions and reactions to certain things
