Christian moral action (Bonhoeffer)
Bonhoeffer was a Henry founding member of the confessing chruch which was a breakaway church that rejected the way German Christian bhurch had accepted nazi ideology
He promoted an ethic of responsibility for towers and focused on the cost of discipleships and the sacrifice and suffering that it entails
The German Christian church was joined by those who incorporated the ideology of nazism into their Christian beleifs
This led to the split in German Protestant chruch in 1934 between Christian’s in a nazi controlled German chruch and a confessing church which sought to be authentically Christian
Nazi ideology gained strong influence and control over the chruch hitler was seen as leader of christianity alongside Jesus who was a Jew
They promoted no minister with Jewish ancestry and campaigned for removal of Old Testament from bible (Jewish scripture)
Bonehoffer was ordained in 1931 with a group called the young reformers who tried to change what was happening in Germany he accused German Christian’s of not confessing their faith , being true to their discipleship and following the commands of god
In 1935 the leaders of the confessing chruch asked bonehoffer to lead a direct and secret seminary to train new pastors
The seminary closed in 1937 by the gestapo he described his time in the seminary as an experience In community and as a place for the spiritual damage and a refuge for the persecuted
Discipleship - for bonehoffer the call to disciple ship entails exclusive obedience to the leadership of Jesus and the willl if god, placing it above the law and any human leadership
This entails cutting yourself off from previous existance not just fitting into your life where convenient this act of obedience is the only real faith
Could link to situation ethics if critising ?
Single minded obedience is what bonehoffer called for just as Jesus called peter to risk his life sand walk on the sea.
Reason, conscience, responsibility and piety all stand in the way of obenience
Suffering and sacrifice are inherent to disciple for anyone who follows Jesus because they must pick up his cross and follow the path off suffering that Jesus walks, this suffering is essential to Christian life
Obedience - Bonhoeffer spoke out against the Nazi ideals in the university he worked in, public lectures and illegal seminars he argued that hitler was the anti christ and is believed to have joined the plot to assassinate hitler in 1944
He said that one must break the Christian teaching of obeying civil authority, justifying civil disoberdience because of his emphasis on obedience of god rather than duty to the state
Grace - gods grace is not offered as a reward for action but earned but a freely given gift
Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of the chruch , cheap grace means grace sold non the market like cheap jacks wares. Bonhoeffer is concerned that people thi k because Jesus died for everyone that gods grace is just given out for free to everyone
Costly grace is grace that is the treasure hidden in the fields the idea that you would gladly sacrifice everything for it . Grace is costly because it calls us to follow Jesus and that means making changes to our lives and our decisions
Solidarity - the purpose of Christian life is not to be religious but rather to being ina relationship with god through living an existance for others. For Bonhoeffer this conviction of being with and for others led to the decision of sharing information to the allies and smuggling Jews to safety into Switzerland under the guise of being a member of the German military
