Topic 1.3 Network
TCP/IP model, Protocols and topologies
Topologies
Types of topologies
Full-Mesh
-
-
Every device is connected to every other device. There is no central device and a good example is the Internet
Star
-
devices are arranged around a central switch/hub.This allows all devices to access the server efficiently. There are fewer data collisions then a bus or ring networks and will only fail if the switch breaks.

TCP/IP Model
Constructing protocols with layers allows developers to concentrate on one aspect of the network and allows the network to be self contained.
4 Layer Model
-
-
Application
-
Encodes the data being sent and controls the sending and receiving of websites/ information over the internet like emails through the use of web browsers and email clients
-
Protocols
Email
POP
Retrieves emails from a mail server. Emails are downloaded and deleted from the server on user access
IMAP
Retrieves emails from a mail server. Emails are downloaded by the client but are NOT deleted from the server unless the user does so.

Transmission media, wireless/wired connections and network components
Transmission media

Copper Cables (UTP)
Wired connections that assure maximum bandwidth, security and reliability.
They use twisted pair cables (wires twisted around each other) to avoid interference. There is usually one cable for receiving and one for sending
-
coaxial cable
-
Examples
(e.g. to TVs , freeview boxes or ariels)

The Internet, DNS, URLs, WAN and LAN
Types of networks
LAN
-
-
Usually connected via UTP, fiber optic or WIFI

The Internet
Is the hardware that joins computers across the world. It is a contraction of the word interconnected and network. The Internet is a mesh network. There are a large number of routers that are joined together.
DNS
Domain Name System
-
-
What is DNS
When we buy a website, we buy the rights to the domain. The name is then added to a domain name server. The DNS has the IP address for the device that holds the domain name. The IP address is returned and the web page loads.
-
URLs
-
Example
WWW.ryedale-rlt.co.uk
-
-
- Domain name- the name the company owns that takes you to the website
- Top Level Domain- where the website is stored
WWW

When was the WW made
In the late 1980s, Tim Berners-Lee created the WWW
