Leadership
Leadership Theories
Trait theories: these theories argue that leadership can be innate or it can be learned. Researchers during the 1930s and 1940s studied how certain traits were more beneficial for leaders to have and/or which traits might be predictive for someone to become a leader.
Contingent and situational theories: these theories state that environment and context play large roles in leadership styles and who will act as a leader.
Behavioural theory: States that, for the most part, leadership is a learned and practiced skill. While this theory does not discuss the situational aspects of leadership, its central point that leadership skills can be taught and learned remains relevant today.
Transformational theories: A modern approach to leadership prioritizing the interactions that take place between the leaders and followers within the environment and systems they are operating under.

Rolemodelling
Leaders should role model expected behaviours to their follower whenever possible. Failure of nurse leaders to role model expected behaviours (eg. nurses following best practice guidelines) can undermine leadership and can result in poor client outcomes.

Collaboration
Leaders realize the importance of utilizing the skills and talents their followers/team through active collaboration.
Courage
Often closely linked to advocacy, nurse leaders must act courageously to do what is right for themselves, their colleagues, and their clients.
Advocacy
Leaders in health care settings advocate for the equitable care and safety of their clients. Advocacy, role modelling, and collaboration are all closely especially those clients who have historically been under
