-
CHROMOSOMES
HOMOLOGOUS PAIRS
-
-
pair of chromosomes have same genes, different alleles
-
-
-
-
MEIOSIS
-
a 2 stage cell division in sexually reproducing organisms that reproduces 4 genetically distinct daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell
-
MEIOSIS I
-
-
P-I: chromosomes condense, nuclear membrane dissolves, homologous chromosomes form bivalents, cross over
M-I: spindle fibres from opposing centrsomes connect to bivalents, align along middle of cell
A-I: spindle fibres contract, split bivalent, homologous chromosomes move to opposite poles
T-I: chromosomes de-condense, nuclear membrane may reform, cell divides, 2 haploid daughter cells
MEIOSIS II
-
P-II: chromosomes condense, nuclear membrane dissolves, centrosomes move to opposite poles
-
A-II: spindle fibres contract, separate sister chromatids, chromatids move to opposite poles
T-II: chromosomes de-condense, nuclear membrane reforms, cells divide, 4 haploid daughter cells formed
-
CANCER
-
damage from radiation, viruses, or mutation --> alter the gene --> cells can replicate without being protected
