NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
solid fuel
coal
bituminous coal
anthracite coal
lignite: it contains a great deal of moisture and produces less heat than anthracite and bituminous coal.
Wood
Peat: like lignite, it contains a great deal of moisture and therefore is a poor fuel.
liquid fuels
: crude oil which is found in areas that are covered by oceans. Over millions of years the organic matter changed into oil. The oil slowly seeped through cracks in the rocks to form pools, from which it can be extracted by drilling
gas fuel: natural gas coming from wells which are drilled deep underground When burned, it gives off almost twice as much heat as the common manufactured gases and leaves no ash or other waste.
fracrking: is a technique designed to recover gas and oil fromshale rock
is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside.
The process can be carried out vertically or, more commonly, by drilling horizontally to the rock layer, which can create new pathways to release gas or used to extend existing channels
petroleum
It is called black gold because it is so valuable to mankind.
It is a dark flammable liquid which consists of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights and other liquid organic compounds.
It is derived mostly by drilling for oil. Once refined, it is used in a large number of consumer products, from petrol and kerosene to asphalt and chemical reagents used to make plastics and pharmaceuticals
non-fossil fuel sources
Nuclear energy is energy in the nucleus of an atom
Nuclear Fusion
: energy is released when atoms are combined or fused together to form a larger atom. This is how the sun produces energy
Nuclear Fission
: atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms, releasing energy. Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission to produce electricity. Uranium is put inside the reactor and is used to generate heat
