John A. MacDonald was seen as the architect of the residential school system which existed in Canada between 1831 and 1996. It is estimated that 150,000 First Nations children attended these schools and an estimated 6,000 children died. With more mass graves currently being discovered at the sites of residential schools around the country, this estimated number of deaths will only continue to rise.
Both Sir John A. MacDonald and Samuel De Champlain played an important role in Canada becoming a country, with De Champlain establishing the first colony in modern day Québec, and Sir John A. MacDonald establishing Canada as its own confederation.
