Do all substances dissolve?
Substances
what are the substances being dissolved
polar or non-polar
when is the form of the substance best for dissolving
what are the properties of the substances being dissolved
is the substance being treated before dissolving
Dissolve
for a solid to be incorporated into a liquid to form a soloution
soloutions are homogenous - same throguhout
solute and solvent can't be distingished from each other
dissolved particles are not visible
proportion of dissolved solute varies between soloutions
what factors affect ability to be dissolved?
type of solvent
the liquid in which a solid is being dissolved into will determine its solubility as substances will dissolve more readily in liquids with the same polarity i.e. polar solute will dissolve in polar solvent
is substance to be dissolved in water?
when substances are dissolved in water, particles move freely so interactions between solute and solvent are effective
substances that dissolve in water have ionic or polar covalent bonding
temprature
an increase in temprature will mean that particles can move faster, meaning that collisions can occur more readily
pressure
When pressure is applied to a gas above the surface of a solvent, the gas moves into solvent and occupies spaces between the particles of the solvent (CK12)
is the substance being stirred?
how fast/often etc, is it being stirred
increasing the speed of stirring, increases the rate of particle collisions between related atoms
surface area
the size of the beaker that the substance is being dissolved in can increase the rate of particle collisions between molecules
the surface area of solute affects its solubility as a smaller solute wil dissolve faster
e.g. a small grain of sugar will dissolve faster than a cube of sugar
how do substances dissolve
particles of solute and particles of solvent are seperated
solute and solvent particles attract each other
solute will dissolve if attarction between solute and solvent particles are stronger than attarction between solute-solue and solvent-solvent attractions
