Sociology - Ethnic differences in Achievement
External Factors
Cultural deprivation (CDT) - claims that low achievement of some ethnic groups is caused by inadaquate socialisation.
INTELLECTUAL & LANGUAGE SKILLS -> CDT claims that low income black families lack intellectual stimulation. Language = ungrammatical.
ATTITUDES, VALUES & FAMILY STRUCTURES -> different attitudes = different socialisation. // fatalism & immediate gratification. // African Carribean children are more likely to lack a male role model = inadequate socialisation // SEWEKK
COMPENSATORY EDUCATION -> policies that aim to counter CD
Operation head start -> compensate CD pupils
Sure start -> support CD preschoolers
CRITICISMS -> victim blaming = culturally different not deprived - ethnocentric curriculum is why they fail. // Cultural exclusion // Cultural domination
Material Deprivation - Low income households // unemployment // discrimination in labour and housing markets
Racism in Wider society - direct and indirect discrimination in work and housing - more likely to be unemployed / low pay
Internal Factors
Labelling - interactionists // Black pupils seen as disruptive / Asians are seen as passive. Ethnic minorities get treated differently. -> disadvantages and SFP
Subcultures - formed as a reaction to labelling
Sewell - Black boys adopted a range of responses to labelling: conformists // innovators // retreatists // rebels
All black students seen as rebels although only small percentage are
Rejecting Negative labels - some students stay committed to succeed. Fuller = Black yr11 girls study
Mirza - by rejecting staff can also restrict them so they may still be disadvantaged
Institutional Racism - Discrimination is built into the schools operation
Critical Race Theory (CRT) - Institutional racism is a deep rooted issue in the educational system
Ethnocentric Curriculum - Prioritises one specific culture while disregarding others. // David = curriculum 'specifically British' teaching culture of 'host community' // Troya & Williams = prioritised english
Gillborn = Assessments are rigged in favour of MC White pupils
