Yanek and his father Oskar snuck past the soldiers to go to the Uncle's Bakery. After forced rationing for so long, Yanek saw bread again. Yanek hasn't eaten in so long he feels extreme joy for food. [page 21-23]

Yanek came up with an idea after opening the big steel door onto the roof. Yanek thought it would be a great idea if his family could hide up there in case the German soldiers wanted to come in and take their valuables, or try to kill Yaneks family. [page 32-36]
There was a director who was in Yaneks town who had "Begged" the parents of Krakow to give the director their children. Of course, everyone knew that their children were going to be sent to death camps. Yanek was extremely terrified because he thought he was going to be sent to a camp. Yanek was comforted with his fathers words, "I'll protect you" and Oskar continued on about how he was going to plan Yanaks Bar mitzvah. [page 40-43]
