Finding light in the darkness, Death March #2, Plaszow/ salt mine…

- - - - Page 66, Chapter 9 "As I scanned the prisoners along the way to the tailor shop, I thought I saw a familiar face. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was Uncle Moshe!"
        This is an example of finding light in the darkness. This is because now Yanek knows not his whole family is gone. He and Uncle Moshe can survive this together. Yanek also has a kind of companion now since he had nobody before.
      - Page 78, Chapter 10 "I was pulling the coat off when I felt a lump in one of the sleeves. I felt it with my fingers. Something was sewn into the sleeve. Of course! Mother had sewn our extra money into our coats so it couldn't be stolen in a raid! There were a thousand zloty inside! I dug through the pile of things, found my old coat as well, and ripped out the seams. Another thousand zloty!"
        
        Yanek found lots of money in his old dwelling. He can now use this to buy food and stay somewhat healthy. He also might share some with Uncle Moshe.
      - Page 119, Chapter 15 " My arm was free! I scooped snow from the grate. My thin fingers were so cold they were blue, but I didn't care. I shoved the snow in my mouth like a toddler eating cake. My throat was so dry I gagged on it, but I forced the melting snow down, ignoring the shocking pain in my teeth from the cold. It was water, woderful water!"
        Yanek had finally found some water. It took him a while to move his arm to reach the snow but he did it. He drank the melted snow and it was a big break for him.
        
        Page 129, Chapter 16 "Water rained down on me. Freezing water so cold it made me scream. Water! Not gas! I was going to live! I laughed and cried, and so did the other men. We celebrated as we shivered, hugging one another and shaking hands, all of us granted a last minute reprieve by the Nazis. I was alive."
        
        Yanek thought he was in this gas chambers and was about to be killed. Instead, he was in the showers. He and the other men were so relieved because they all thought they were going to die. Yaneks confidence was renewed and he carried on his survival story.
        
        Page 156, Chapter 20 "The boy introduced himself to me as Fred. i told him my name - Yanek. Not B-3087. I hadn't spoken my name to anyone for as long as I could remember. Fred and I shook hands. It was the first international contact I'd had with anyone at the camps since Uncle Moshe had died. We were all the time touching other people-lined up at roll call, at work, in line to get food, in bed at night. But I hand't shaken hands or hugged anyone on purpose in months. it felt good to connect with someon, even though Uncle Moshe's words came back to me again: You have no name, no personality, no family, no friends. Nothing to identify you, nothing to care about. Not if you want to survive."
        This is an example of finding light in the darkness because Yanek has found his first friend. He has been super lonley for the past 6 years. He now has somebody to talk to instead of himself.

        distance, and our shambling column - so much smaller now than when we had begun our journey - slowed to look up. Three enormous planes flew by, high up in the clouds, raining tiny black specks from their bellies. Bombs. They were Allied planes, dropping bombs somewhere in the distance! We heard the rumble of explosions and saw smoke rise over a hill on the horizon. I wanted to cheer them on, to raise my fists and cry, "Yes! Yes! Stick it to the Nazis!" but I knew I had to keep silent. I wasn't sure I had the strength to shout anyway. The kapos cracked their whips and we got moving again, but secretly I was still urging the Allies on to victory."
        This is an example of finding light in the darkness because the act of Allies dropping bombs on the Nazis is one step closer to Yaneks freedom and the camps being liberated.
