Wieliczka Salt Mine
Yanek got to get away from Amon Goeth, and not have to constantly be on lookout to not be shot. (pg. 96)
Yanek was mesmerized by the beauty of the salt statues in the mines, he thought it was "astounding that there could still be beauty in the world. Especially here, a mile underground". (pg. 100)
Plaszow Concentration Camp
Yanek finds that Uncle Moshe, his only family left, is still alive. (pg. 67)
Uncle Moshe tells Yanek that he needs to survive no matter what so that the entire Jewish race isn't wiped out. (pg. 70)
While on a work detail in Krakow Yanek finds two thousand zloty and diamond earrings in the ghetto. Yanek and Uncle Moshe are able to use this money and finally get food to eat after so long. (pg. 78-81)
Yanek finds a loose floorboard in his barracks and finds a hiding space to regain his strength, and shares it with others to help them out too, which shows that Yanek is a kind and considerate person. (pg. 88-91)
Yanek lies his way out of getting killed by Amon Goeth and survives another day. (pg. 93-94)
1st Death March
The Allies were getting closer and they were pushing back on Germany. (pg. 167)
Yanek was tried to ration his food to make it last longer so he could eat a bit everyday. (pg. 167)
Yanek swears to himslef that he will continue on and survive. (pg. 168)
During the march the prisoners start singing songs from their homeland which provides a sense of community. (pg. 172-173)
Yanek risks his life and helps a boy survive along the way because he is a kind person, Yanek also tells the boy not to give up. (pg. 175)
Even though the chances are low, another prisoner still helps Yanek carry the boy during the march which gives Yanek hope that maybe not everyone is unwilling to help. (pg. 179)
Trzebinia Concentration Camp
The Nazis forcing Yanek to move rocks back and fourth made him mad and gave him motivation to push through the hardship. (pg. 108)
While Yanek was being transported to Birkenau he used his intelligence to survive and not suffocate like the rest of the prisoners. (pg. 115)
Yanek was able to eat snow to hydrate himself so that he wouldn't die of dehydration. (pg. 119-120)
Birkenau Concentration Camp
Yanek survives getting gassed, and is grateful that he is still alive. (pg. 129-130)
Yanek has a bar mitzvah for a boy in his barracks because he still cares for others and he recites the words Uncle Moshe told him, "We cannot let them tear us from the pages of the world". (pg. 134-135)
Yanek figures out a way to get a little more food to survive the nights and prevent himself from becoming a Muselmann. (pg. 138)
Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
Yanek got some food to eat and decided to ration it because he didn't know when he would get to eat again. (pg. 187)
Yanek told himself to live until the Allies come. (pg. 192)
Krakow Ghetto
Yanek is a smart kid who enjoys western movies, and even built his own projector. (pg. 4-5)
Yanek's father is an optimist and reassures Yanek that everything will be okay. (pg. 10-23)
Yanek's father says "Let them take everything. They cannot take who we are" and provides a sense of hope. (pg. 11)

Auschwitz Concentration Camp
Yanek lied abut his age and job in order to make it look like he could work so he could survive. (pg. 151)
Yanek makes friends with a boy his age named Fred, so now he doesn't feel lonely anymore. (pg. 156-157)
The prisoners hear the Allies bombing close by, which hints to the nearing end of the war. (pg. 158)
