Krakow

Yanek found a pigeon coop and turned it into a home for him and his family. The coop had a secure lock for the door and was much safer and they had the space all to themselves (Chap. 5, pg. 35)

Yanek had a Bar Mitzvah for Yanek which made him forget about all the horrors going on because he had looked forward to this day for years (Chap. 6, pg. 47).

Plaszow

Finding out Uncle Moshe is in the concentration camp with him. (pg 66, Chap. 9)

Wieliczka Salt Mine

A guy who had traumatized his mother was killed and Yanek felt that he had gotten what he deserved. (pg. 104)

Yanek was fed amazing food such as thick soup and fresh bread and got to recover for a week with no work to do. This gave Yanek hope of surviving. (pg. 198)

This allowed Yanek to find light in the darkness because it gave him hope that he could survive with the feeling of safety by one of his family members.

After not eating for days he was fed a warm watery soup that brought him hope. (pg. 187)

Yanek helped a boy trudge through the death march and an old man decided to help him out.

Yanek stood under a pipe and water had suddenly come out. Yanek had discovered a shower and could clean himself up with this water. This gave him comfort and more hope to survive. (pg. 129)

Yanek had wooden clogs for shoes which helped him keep his feet protected

They had to move rocks and work for no reason. This angered Yanek and gave him energy. (pg. 108)
