Throughout the whole time of chapter 30, I believe was finding light in the darkness. Yanek was happy when he got his own room, a nice bed, a wash-cloth, a cup, and a toothbrush. He was delighted and cried with others when they ate a good, real meal. He honored his dead family and people who deserved remembrance. He found people he used to live near and other family. And in the end, he started a new and better life to live.
