American Jazz - early origins of jazz
Tap (only if talking about Kelly)
This percussive style connected with British clog dancing and the Irish jig to form a unique form of movement and rhythm
Clog dancing - the dancer would accentuate the rhythms of their feet by wearing wooden-soled clogs/shoes
Slave owners took away traditional African percussive instruments and so slaves turned to percussive dancing to express themselves and retain their cultural identities
Tap dancers began collaborating with jazz musicians incorporating improvisation and complex syncopated rhythms into their movement
Originated in the early 19th century in America
20th century tap was an important feature in popular vaudeville and minstrel shows
Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson - master tapper of his time (1920's)
His lightness and elegance while tapping influenced tapping on the balls of your feet and influenced people such as Fred Astaire and then Gene Kelly He challenged the stereotypes of African Americans while performing and presented himself as different to the stereotypes that others played them as being.
Vaudeville
Emerged from Minstrel shows
Its popularity lasted from the 1880's to the 1930's
A variety show originating from France. Acts would be songs, dances, comic routines, magicians, acrobats and animal shows
Fosse was a vaudeville performer and the style remained with him while choreographing later in life (eg Chicago where each section is a different vaudeville act and we see Velma Kelly as a vaudeville star and Roxy Hart as an aspiring vaudeville star)
