Machines
Types of simple machine
Inclined plane
-
Can push the same mass up a sloping surface, with much less effort
The force required to raise an object at a distance is greatly reduced by increasing the distance over which the force much be applied
-
Lever
-
-
-Fulcrum is a point at which the lever pivots
-Load is an object you are lifting
-Effort is the force applied to make the object move
-
-
-
Mechanical advantage is a measure of the force amplification achieve by using a tool.
MA=output force ÷ input force
-
Pulley
A basic pulley comprises of a wheel on a fixed axle, with a groove along the edge to guide a rope
-
-
-
Wedge
The wedge is the active twin of the inclined plane. But unlike the inclined plane, which is stationary, a wedge does useful work by moving.
For wedge, the effort force is applied to the vertical edge of the wedge
-
Wheel and Axle
A wheel is locked to a central axle and they rotate each other when a force is applied on either on of them
When we place a heavy object on the axle and push it, the rolling of the wheel reduces the friction making it easier to move.
