Genre of Music and Encoding
Variables
Independent Variable:
Music Genre listened to while encoding (word list) [Metal, Classical, Pop, Country/Folk, Rock, HipHop/Rap, Neo Soul]
Dependent Variable:
Number of words recalled
Recorded GPA (if Observational)
Focus groups can be asked questions such as 'what do you get out of your music'
Extraneous Variable:
Length of each song
Words Having to
remember
Participants Relation to the song
Age of particpants
Sleep, Caffeine and Food intake prior to the experiment
Controlled Variable:
[Time giving to encode words present]
[What and How many words are present]
[What words they are]
Record a subjective quantitative measure of how much they enjoyed the song 1-10
Record the age of particpants
Sample
Population:
Congruent Age (Year 11s)
From glenunga international
Pros:
Music is a profound culture in younger generations and they normally listen to music while doing school work (applicability)
Most year 11s will have already turned 16 and be able to judge their own consent
Cons:
Cant be generalized for old/younger ages due to the evidence of differing effectiveness in Semantic and Episodic memory due to age.
Not all participants will be able to consent for themselves.
Will have to conduct the experiment in a school setting and leaves possibility for extraneous factors such as distractions.
Glenunga culture and
100 students divided among 7 groups and 1 controlled group.
12-13 per group
100 students divided among 3 groups
33-34 per group
Allows larger sample sizes per group, increases validity of the research.
Investigation Design
Experimental Quantitative
Cons
Doesn't give much personal insight into contestants
Performance can be effected by extraneous variables
Pros
Isn't made subject to subjectivity
Can be graphed to better show relationship
Qualitative
Cons
Can't be graphed
Extremely subjective and can be taken in different ways by different people
Pros
More personalized view
Can guage personal experience and specific nuance
Observational
Pros
Some ethical concerns can be negated, e.g forcing people to listen to music
Could Track a larger sample size due to less need for lab condiitions
Cons
Lacks External Validity
Cant minimalize the effect of extraneous variables
No random allocation
Ethics
Of Participants:
Anonymity must be granted
Consent and right to revoke said consent
Consent must be made on a informed basis
Consent by a guardian if the participant is under 16
Appropriate devision to disincentivize cheating within groups
Use of google forms to submit response allowing for no tracable factors
Of methodology:
Songs may contain disturbing themes
We must be carful when playing the music to keep the sound at a acceptable level to avoid ear damage. - Uk's DeafBlind association recommends listening to music through earbuds between 65-80 decimals anything at 100 decimals should restricted to 15 minutes of listening time

.
Should give the participants an outline of what the investigation entails, including how loud the music will be and the song themes present, so they can make an informed decision on their consent.
