On average participants that have been given more memory cues will have…
-
Variables
Controlled Variables
- The age of the participants
- Stage 1 Psychology students
- Type of test being conducted
Independant Variable
- The amount of cues given to each group
Extraneous Variables
- Participant Variables: The gender, emotional state, music preferance/exposure, Medical record
- Situational Variables: The time of day, Volume of the room , The lighting of the room
Participant variables: The gender of a person can definitely affect the memory recall of a participant as different genders have different abilities. The emotional state wasn't also considered which could affect how many words a participant can recall. If one is in a bad emotional state then the recall of words isn't on their mind at that moment. Furthermore, the participants were asked how much they like music on a scale of 1-10 however, it wasn't considered what type of music the participants listen to. This could affect the recall of words as different music influence the type of words one is familiar with. Finally, the medical record wasn't accounted for which is very important. If someone was to have a hearing impairment then their ability to comprehend the cues is significantly different from someone who has perfect hearing.
Situational variables: When conducting research the time of day is very important to ensure that the best results are obtained. If this experiment was conducted at the end of the day then the mind isn't at its best state thus, the amount of words that can be recalled is decreased. Futhermore, the volume of the room is vital as if the room is loud than the ability to hear the cues given is decreased meaning the word recall will be decreased too. Finally the lighting of the room is also important as if the room is dark then the mind releases hormones that makes one feel sleepy impacting the participants effectivness of recalling words.
Dependant Variable
- The number of words recalled
Strengths:
- Controlling the age and which class the participants are in ensures that the experiment is collecting a certain age group rather than participants with different age groups as the older or younger someone is affected their word recall ability.
- The type of experiment being conducted should stay the same as the strength in that is that the final data that is being obtained is comparable and a final conclusion can be made
Limitations:
- All the extraneous variables that exist can't be controlled which decreases the validity of the results.
- The major extraneous variables such as the emotional state or the medical record weren't controlled which effects if the research conducted was even reliable
Quantitative data in the form of numerical values will be used to obtain the amount of words recalled by each participants.
