soils
podsols
-
structure of soil
-
the next layer is a narrow acidic region, minerals are leached through this layer by water
-
-
impacts on agriculture
-
farming can take place, but the soil must be treated with lime to reduce acidity
formation of a hardpan can prevent water draining away, making the soil vulnerable to waterlogging
latosols
location
-
e.g. brazil, central africa
-
characteristics
-
latosol soils are reliant on the rainforest to maintain their fertility because all nutrients are found in the top most layer
-
impacts on agriculture
-
once the rainforest is removed the soil becomes vundreble to heavy rainfall and leaching, which causes the soil to become even more nutrient poor
humans have adapted to this by using slash and burn technique, this is effective because burning the plants transfers nutrients into the soil. soil is used for 1 year and then left to recover
current farming practices aren't giving the soil enough time to recover so perminent soil degredation is occuring
