We decided to assess the themes that occur throughout the novel A Lost Lady (1923) by Willa Cather with special attention to the characters and how these interlink throughout the novel. Our chosen software programme was coggle, as it allowed us to visually establish the links that connected each theme and how these also apply to specific characters throughout the novel. We worked off of three core themes: Change, Class and Gender and then delved deeper into each with more specific sub-headings and supportive evidence. Firstly, with the theme of change, we assessed the idea of ‘A Changing America’ which ties into the idea of the social, political, economic, and ideological shift which is noted through modern American fiction and within the novel, we also explored the theme of aging, considering the novel follows the coming of age of Niel and pays significant attention to the age gap between himself and Mrs. Forrester. Loss is also displayed in the death of Captain Forrester and a loss of reputation alongside the physical loss of land that was seen in the conclusion of the pioneering era. The broader theme of class explores social status and the affect this has upon the characters throughout the novel. Finally, gender explores both female and male representation throughout A Lost Lady with attention to characters such as Mrs. Forrester, Niel and Captain Forrester. Gender also examines the portrayal of male and female interaction throughout the novel.
