How does our understanding of human dignity affect the way we live our faith?
Catholic Social Justice Principals are the things that make us faithful..
Human dignity; We are created in the image of God to know, love, and serve Him, and to offer Him praise. Every human life is sacred and deserves to be respected. All other social teachings build on this important truth.
Peace; Peace is the result of social justice. Peace depends on respect for the human dignity of all people, as well as mutual respect, cooperation, and participation among all peoples and nations in God's image creation.
Community and the common good; To be human is to belong to our family, community, and society. No matter how we differ, we are one human family. We are connected, and we respect and help one another. The communities we belong to help make us who we are. Therefore, the better they are, the better they help us to be. For that reason, we need to work for the good of these communities-our families, schools, neighbourhoods, and parishes. This is what we mean by working for the common good.
Care for people who are poor and vulnerable; Because every person has dignity, we have a social responsibility to defend, protect, and care for those who are, in any sense, poor or vulnerable.
Solidarity; We have a responsibility to respect and protect the rights of all people. We fulfill this responsibility when we support human dignity and develop healthy communities.
Dignity of work; Human dignity includes the right to work. We all have the right to useful work, fair wages, and safe working conditions. We also have the responsibility to protect the dignity of workers and their right to work, fair wages, and safe working conditions.
Rights and responsibilities; We are accountable to God to become what God created us to be and calls us to be. We are accountable to the common good of our various communities. These are our responsibilities. We also have rights to have what we need in order to fulfill our responsibilities. Those rights are rooted in our responsibilities.
Stewardship of creation; We respect God by respecting His creation. We are made in God's image to do His work as managers or stewards of creation. God calls us to care for and protect creation.
Participation in society; Everyone has a right to participate in his or her society and community. People and groups should not be excluded unfairly. We want to contribute to the way that our society develops and grows.
The common good and solidarity.
The common good is good we get from being part of a community.
Think of it as if you were on a sports team and a player acts like he is the best and that he should do everything for the team and not only what he is supposed to do, chances are that you will not win very often.
If someone on your team acts unselfishly and does what is best for the team and does their own roles, chances are that you will win a lot.
The common good which each teammate has is the happiness and friendship of being part of a really good team.
Common good does not just come from yourself. You need other human beings to create the common good.
So working for the common good means that you are contributing in a community without being selfish so that you and the people around you can live a good life.
As humans we have responsibilities to God and to other people.
The Catholic Church helps us to grow in faith, and it helps us make wise decisions and to take action for the common good and dignity of all people.
One way that it does this is by reading encyclicals, or letters and teachings from the catholic Pope.
As God's creation we are all one, we are all connected. We all have to work as one.
No matter what others believe or how they behave toward us, we the Church are called to serve and love other people.
Every human being is equal and should have equal rights and they all have a purpose and a role, and every person is needed.
When we realize that we are one with those people who are vulnerable, poor, and those who suffer injustice in our local, global, and national communities we see our responsibility to answer their needs with our action.
Grace is a power of God's life and love within us, which motivates us to live as God wants.
We just don't just feel sympathy for those who suffer. Charity moves us to work toward positive change.
Grace reminds us that we are not acting on our own, the Holy Spirit works with us and in us and through us for the good of others and the world.
When we see injustice or disrespect for human dignity, God's grace helps us to act.
Solidarity means that we are interdependent.
Rights and responsibilities.
Today you were woken up and got ready for school, then you went to school and learned. These are your rights and responsibilities.
You have rights to the necessities of life, such as food, water, safety, and education.
Not all children have the same opportunities as most children in Canada do. Sometimes human rights are not respected.
Imagine if you were a girl and being told you could not go to school because you are a girl or that you need to work. That is what some kids in parts of the world are facing.
Imagine you get really sick or even die because your country does not have the vaccinations that Canada has.
Imagine walking miles every day just to get clean healthy water for drinking.
This is not fair and it is not part of God's plan.
In God's plan every human being is treated with respect and has equal rights, human dignity, education, safety, health, and rest.
As part of God's plan we need to take responsibility and care for the rights of other people.
Dignity and charity.
Work is more than just a job that you go to to make money. It is also a right and duty to be cooperative and kind to others.
It is how people contribute to society, develop self-esteem, and provide for themselves and their family members.
We are working together for positive change so that the dignity for God's children, and the rights they deserve, are respected.
People may work in agriculture, factories, or construction. Although, no matter what kind of job they work, useful work gives them a good sense of fulfillment and purpose.
All people have the right to productive work, fair wages, and decent working conditions.
Sometimes, this is not respected. In some places, people are expected to work so many long hours non-stop for little money or in very unsafe working conditions.
This is not human dignity. As part of God's family, we have the responsibility to speak out when we see the rights of others being violated or threatened.
We are made to love God, and that love is designed to be shared with others.
We as humans are equipped for a life of charity when we are open to God's purpose and will for our lives.
The Holy Spirit stirs our hearts through goodness, truth, and beauty, and draws us deeper and deeper into the love of Christ.
As we open our hearts, we may also notice nudges from the Holy Spirit. These nudges inspire us to honour human dignity in others, to seek the common good, to participate in charitable organizations, and to share with people need.
The Holy Spirit inspires us to be present, to listen, and to share God's love and invitation.
