Mughal Rulers
Akbar the Great
Religion- was religiously tolerant, allowed everyone to follow their religion, and celebrated Hindu holidays, even though he himself was Muslim.
Money- Kept taxes relatively low and set up a reliable system, making the people happy. He had his tax collectors be lenient when the harvest was bad.
Government- ruled over a huge number of people, so needed to make sure his people were happy. He made sure his court was open to everyone, not just the wealthy.
Warfare/Empire- a successful ruler, the empire expanded vastly during his reign.
Jahangir
Religion- was tolerant towards Muslims, Hindus and Christians, but did not approve of Sikhs and had some executed gruesomely.
Money- introduced trading with Europe, which brought in a lot of money for the Mughals. Did not reintroduce the unpopular non-Muslim tax.
Government- was said to have ruled fairly. He installed a giant 80 foot long chain with bell on it, so those with complaints could have their voices heard without any formalities.
Warfare/Empire- there were some rebellions, but overall he was successful in expanding the empire. He conquered regions of modern-day northern India that his father, Akbar could not conquer, as well as expanding the empire south.
Shah Jahan
Religion- was a stricter Muslim than his father, Jahangir and his grandfather, Akbar. He passed laws that banned the construction and upkeep of Hindu temples and Christian churches. He celebrated Muslim holidays enthusiastically.
Money- increased taxes to pay for unnecessary things for himself, and had a gold throne constructed during a famine, and donated very little to the starving people.
Government- reduced the number of people in power, therefore making the ruling class much more elite.
Warfare/Empire- the empire expanded steadily, and under Shah Jahan the Mughals conquered a city that had proved difficult to capture.
Aurangzeb
Religion- was a very strict Muslim. He tried to make the Mughal Empire an Islamic state, and used Islamic Law, ruling with an iron fist.
Money- reintroduced the unpopular non-Muslim tax. Because of the extent of his empire, claimed a lot of tax money.
Government- Because of the expanse of his empire and the different people in it, there were lots of rebellions, which resulted in a lot of people dying, but he was said to have been a very effective ruler.
Warfare/Empire- the empire expanded a lot during his reign, and trading continued with England. In 1685, there was a war between the Mughals and the English over trade, but four years later, the Mughals won and trading continued between the two with renegotiated terms.
