Influences
Leonard Bernstein - composer who was unknown before Fancy Free but Robbins took a gamble. The music influenced the choreography and has a close connection. Bernstein continued to collaborate with Robbins for On the Town and West Side Story. The section 'Cool' was praised for its complex rhythmic score. Bernstein was inspired by Stravinsky
Ella Daganova - provided ballet lessons in return for cleaning her windows (while he was at Gluck Sandors). This was his first ballet training
George Balanchine - Artistic director at New York City Ballet, Robbins takes over the ballet when George dies
He was an immigrant - relates to the relevant themes in his works specifically West Side Story (The Sharks)
Gluck Sandor - had a hybrid/eclectic dance style. He was Robbins's first dance mentor. Robbins danced with Gluck for 4 years
Robbins used real people - he used real people to influence his works and real life events in society for example the war influenced Fancy Free and immigration in New York influenced West Side Story
