Does having an interest in music affect memory performance?
Investigation Design:
Experimental
Advantages
They have a high level of control over extraneous variables, which can reduce confounding and increase internal validity
Disadvantages
As this research is only being conducted in an artificial environment, It may not apply to the real-world scenarios
Controlled
Strengths:
Objective Quantitative results allows for accurate measurements
Allows for graphs to be made from data collected
Weaknesses:
The audio quality making it hard to understand word
Distractions from other participants
Small participant size making it hard to get reliable data
Variables
Extraneous Variables
Participant Variables - Intellegence, memory performance, personality, english capabilities, concentration capabilities
Situational variables - background noise, background distractions (people walking past the window), shared room with participants
Dependent Variable:
Accurate words recalled
Independent Variable:
The Individual's Interest in Music
Sample
Representation:
Results collected does not reflect upon great masses of population
Size:
15 Stage 1 Psychology Students
Passion in Psychology
Strengths:
Passion in Psychology might result in participants commitment to the experiment to be better than uninterested participants
Analyzing the results in easier due to low number of participants
Weaknesses:
Low number of students may result in a higher chance of errors
Due to the low number of participants, research can't be applied to a larger scale
Method:
Students wrote answers on white board
Peer's marked the work for results
Reliability:
Due to the unconsistent results, the reliability of this investigation is very low
Weaknesses:
Peer's could have given extra marks
Participants could have edited their work after they found out the results
Strengths
It allowed for transparency in how the answers were being recorded
Peer's marking for work prevented cheating
Validity:
The desired results didn't become measured due to the data having low correlation to the hypothesis
