Deep in debt with no way to make a living, farmers moved from the land looking for a better life elsewhere, more than one-quarter of the population of Canada's western farmlands moved off the land, while some people moved with all their belongings, other people left everything behind, they abandoned farmland, homes, and furniture..

Many people thought these men would become dangerous if they became desperate enough. Governments were also concerned because they feared that these men might organize relief camps where unemployed men were sent to work. However the real goal of these camps was more to keep control of these men rather than give them help
